Die Durchströmung des bestehenden Gewässersystems wurde durch eine zusätzliche Überströmstrecke sowie durch die Vergrößerung eines Brückenbauwerks gewährleistet. Bei Schönbühel und Rossatz werden ca. 50 Hektar der namensgebenden Auenwildnis als Naturschutzgebiet gesichert. Darüber hinaus beinhaltete das Projekt in der gesamten Wachau Artenschutzmaßnahmen für Seeadler, Schwarzpappel und Amphibien.
